The passenger who passed away has been named by family and friends.

A young man who tragically died in a collision in Wickersley, Rotherham, has been named locally in tributes.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed today (June 3) that the 20-year-old had passed away after being injured in the crash on Morthen Road.

He has been named in online tributes as Mackenzie Ball.

His family has been informed, and are being supported by officers, police have said.

Hundreds of comments online, under SYP’s Facebook announcement about the fatal crash, read “thinking of you all”, “so sorry for your loss”, “love to all family and friends”, among other words of sympathy and support.

One commenter wrote: “I heard this yesterday, didn’t want to think it was true, What a terrible loss. My thoughts are with all of you.”

Tributes and flowers for Mackenzie, who is referred to as ‘Mac’, ‘Mack’ and ‘Macky’ by many commenters, are already being left at the scene.

One post reads: “RIP Macky, gone way too soon, so heartbreaking, such an honour to have had you in my life.”

He is described as a “lovely lad” and “the kindest boy ever” in tributes.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody following the collision.

It is reported that a silver Land Rover Discovery and silver Subaru Forester were involved in the fatal crash and left the road.

Mackenzie, who was a passenger in the Land Rover, sadly died at the scene.

Following the collision, the driver and three passengers of the Subaru Forester fled from the scene on foot, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The force said in a statement: “We are now asking for any witnesses to the collision or any motorists in the area around the time of the incident with dashcam footage to come forward.”
