Sheffield Wednesday’s ambitions of tying Josh Windass down to a new contract are under threat with two Championship clubs keen on stealing him away from S6, according to reports.

The former Rangers attacker, who scored vital goals in all three of Wednesday’s must-win matches in the final stages of their historic survival effort, has been offered a new deal as per their end of season retained list, along with six other senior men.

The future of Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer was confirmed late last week, but it seems work is yet to be done for five others including Windass. The Star understands Windass is a player seen as important to Danny Röhl’s plans at Wednesday and that talks will continue between club and the player’s representatives this week. As is the case with other players, both parties are believed to be agreeable to a new deal - though further aspects need ironing out before any ultimate agreement is reached.

Those talks will take place after a report released by Football Insider claimed two Championship sides who will enter the new campaign with serious play-off ambitions - Coventry City and Hull City - are ‘leading the way’ on his signing, with both clubs said to be ‘planning to make the 30-year-old an offer over the coming weeks’. The Star understands there are further clubs interested in Windass, whose contract is up at the end of the month.

Windass has tallied 57 direct goal involvements (40 goals and 17 assists) in his 135 Wednesday outings since signing for the club, initially on loan, from Wigan Athletic in 2020. His last-gasp diving header secured promotion from League One to cap off the Owls’ dramatic play-off campaign at the end of the 2022/23 season. He has become a senior figure in the Wednesday camp and has worn the captain’s armband on occasion.

With Bannan and Palmer sewn up, the futures of Windass, Dominic Iorfa, player of the year Will Vaulks, Cameron Dawson and Di’Shon Bernard are yet to be officially resolved as the Owls continue their start to what is expected to be a busy summer.
