Liam Palmer says that he’s pleased to have finalised his new Sheffield Wednesday contract so early in the summer.

The long-serving Owl, who is now the club’s eighth highest appearance-maker with 435 outings, was due to see his Wednesday deal expire at the end of June, but it was confirmed last week that new terms had been agreed and that he would be sticking around at Hillsborough.

It’s good news for him, but for the Wednesday family in general as one of their own committed his future to the club alongside captain, Barry Bannan, and he says that the team are keen to carry on where they finished things in their great escape of 2023/24. He also hinted that other new contracts could follow.

“I’m really happy to get things tied up and I’m looking forward to getting back to working and seeing what we can do,” he told the club’s official site. “I’m enjoying family time and being able to take the kids to more places, but other than that I’ve been quite busy really!

“I had the Edinburgh Marathon and the charity run after the season, it’s nice to have everything tied up and go and enjoy some time away on holiday and recharge... I had a chat with the manager at the end of the season about getting something done quickly. I think most players who spoke to him wanted him to stay as well.

“When I spoke to him after the last game, he was keen to have a strong core in the group and that’s music to my ears with the role I’ve adopted in the last few years, as one of the experienced players who can help the younger players.

“On the pitch I’m always keen to impress, but being off it is just as key, especially when you’re putting a new squad together. We want to carry on from where we left off.”
