A Derbyshire non-league side has once again dipped into Sheffield Wednesday’s academy alumni to strengthen their squad.

Buxton FC compete in the sixth tier National League North secured a strong midtable placing last time out, finishing 14th and 12 points clear of the relegation spots. Now it appears they are looking to push on with the signing of a second former Owls starlet inside a week.

Energetic midfield man Will Trueman, who played only one senior match for Wednesday but was a star performer in the club’s academy system before he was released last year, had his switch from Mickleover Sports confirmed last week.

And now the club have confirmed that Jack Stobbs will join him after the 27-year-old left Torquay United at the end of last season. Stobbs, who captained the Wednesday side that won the Professional Development League 2 North title and National Championship in 2016–17, will take strong professional experience to The Bucks having played in the Championship with the Owls, the Scottish Premiership with Livingston and in League Two with Port Vale and Oldham Athletic.

The pair will join Connor Kirby - another ex-Owls academy midfielder - at Buxton. Kirby was another of Stobbs’ vintage with both having been part of the Jos Luhukay push for academy involvement at first team level.

A pacey wide player, Stobbs made his debut as a teenager on the final home game of the 2013/14 season but suffered a serious ankle injury the following pre-season. He played a total of six games for Wednesday’s senior side across all competitions and enjoyed loans with Port Vale and Livingston before his release in 2020.
