Sheffield Wednesday fans have full trust in Danny Rohl... Chansiri also has to

This column’s line on Sheffield Wednesday’s summer business is probably the same as most supporters: “If Danny Rohl’s ok with it, I’m ok with it.” And I reckon we’re all ok with Yann Valery, a player he coached at Southampton, as his first fee-paying acquisition.

Doubtless there will be several more signings to come, hopefully also with the manager’s stamp on them. Which is why I feel it’s best to draw back a little from the debate over the departure of Will Vaulks and the possibly impending one of Josh Windass.

There is an unquantifiable “if” at the start of whether the manager is ok with those or not. It’s just a measure of the faith in Rohl that we are prepared to be swayed on his wishes either way.

The most important thing is that owner Dejphon Chansiri is swayed on those wishes. So if, as strongly suggested, the manager wants to keep Windass then the negotiations should be guided by that, in my view.

What I’d also say is that Vaulks, much revered for his qualities as a human besides as a player, is not the type to indulge in a sour grapes attack on a club where he was player of the year. His Radio Sheffield comments suggesting Wednesday needed a better “structure” and a clear “budget” for the manager were worth listening to. I am certain they were not aimed at Rohl.

Certainly they coincided with views expressed here, so I can’t disagree. Windass has hinted in the past at there being a better way to do things, as has skipper Barry Bannan. But all that matters in the end is that Rohl is on board with developments. That’s the default position.

It’s important to draw that line because, much as I admire both Windass and Vaulks, and would like to have seen the core group kept together, I can see why the Owls would not commit to three-year deals for players of 30 at a time when they are rightly looking to lower the age of the group. Again, providing Rohl, a particular admirer of Windass, agrees.

Knowing the exact parameters of what could be afforded as a bottom line budget figure, would have helped perhaps. I’ll park that for now at the repeating groove stage.

We can only really judge from here on and Rohl needs a handle on all of it, players out as well as in. He’s the guy the fans really trust and transfers happen in his name. So I’m giving the benefit of any doubt, for now, to the club in the hope of a successful way of operating. And I don’t doubt that the chairman, for all the reservations hanging fire, wants the club to succeed as badly as anyone.
