How Sheffield United’s Sam McCallum interest is affecting their pursuit of Peterborough United’s Harrison Burrows

Sheffield United’s pursuit of out-of-contract left-back Sam McCallum does not signal the end of their interest in Peterborough United’s Harrison Burrows, The Star understands. McCallum is available this summer after being released by Championship rivals Norwich City and United are keen to bring him to Bramall Lane.

But that is understood to be independent of interest in Burrows, the highly-rated Peterborough left-back who was named League One player of the season last term. Burrows is now in the final year of his Posh contract and his current club are open to a sale, rather than risk losing one of their prized assets for free next summer.

Burrows reported for pre-season training with Posh earlier this week amid speculation over his future. Despite reports from Peterborough that Burrows has agreed personal terms at Bramall Lane, the ongoing takeover at Bramall Lane is impacting transfer activity and as things stand, no significant fees will be paid out until either the new ownership is in place or one of the Blades’ most valuable assets are sold this summer.

After the release of Max Lowe this summer, and the decision not to take up the eight-figure option to make Yasser Larouci’s loan spell permanent, Rhys Norrington-Davies is currently the only senior left wing-back on United’s books, with the Welsh international on the comeback trail from another serious hamstring issue and handed a 12-month contract extension by United.

With six weeks to go until their season opener at Preston North End United are still to make their first summer signing, with Jamie Shackleton of Leeds another player of interest amid uncertainty over his future at Leeds United.
