Police and ambulance sent to major police incident in Birley, Sheffield

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a police incident in Sheffield, which saw a woman seriously injured.

It comes after a section Wadsworth Avenue, on the Birley estate, near Frecheville, was sealed off early on Sunday morning, after emergency services had been called to the scene.

Residents told how they saw officers from South Yorkshire Police at the scene, as well as paramedic teams from Yorkshire Ambulance Service as part of the response.

Today police have confirmed to the The Star that they have arrested a man, on suspicion of false imprisonment and attempted murder.

The force said in a statement: “We were called at around 8.30am to a report of concern for the safety of a woman at an address on Wadsworth Avenue in Birley, Sheffield.

“Officers and specialist resources attended and the road was closed while they conducted their work.

“A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and false imprisonment. He remains in police custody.

“A woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is receiving treatment.”

They added that the victim and suspect were believed to be known to each other and said that there was no ongoing risk to the public.

Following use of force during the detention of the suspect, a mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information which may assist officers is asked to call 101.
