Newfield School in Sheffield placed into lockdown as police respond to reports of man trespassing on grounds

Police were called to a school in Sheffield this morning after a stranger was reportedly seen trespassing on the grounds.

South Yorkshire Police said it had responded to reports of ‘suspicious activity’ on the grounds of Newfield School, on Lees Hall Road, Norton Lees, today, Wednesday, June 19, at 9.28am.

A spokesperson for the force told The Star: “An unknown man was seen on the school grounds and was believed to be trespassing.

“We attended and conducted an area search of the grounds and surrounding area to no gain. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Emma Anderson, headteacher at Newfield School, which is part of Mercia Learning Trust, said: “This morning, Newfield School initiated a lockdown as a precautionary measure due to an intruder on the school grounds.

“Thanks to our robust safeguarding procedures, the intruder was unable to enter the building, and did not make any direct contact with students or staff.

“The police responded swiftly, and the lockdown was lifted shortly thereafter.

“All students and staff are safe, and the school quickly resumed its normal routine.”
