The self-proclaimed ‘number one food reviewer’ in the UK has been left impressed by a coffee shop in Sheffield.

Matt Binge, also known as Food Review Club, is an internet sensation, with over 10 million likes on his TikTok account, and around two million followers across all his social media accounts.

In a video posted on their social media platforms yesterday (June 18), Matt and the team behind Food Review Club visited a viral croissant and coffee shop in Sheffield city centre. It has already been watched by over 42,000 people on Facebook.

Sheffield’s Cawa Coffee found immense success after their weird and wonderful croissant concoctions blew up the internet. The pastries caused such a stir that the team even decided to go all in on the product, opening La Croissanteria in place of their cafe on Division Street earlier this year.

The shop is well-known for its unusual fishfinger and wagyu beef-filled croissants, the latter of which secured the thumbs up from our reporter Harry Harrison, who described it as “divine”.

Food Review Club’s star Matt made his way to the coffee shop after saying he had “seen and heard everything about this place”, specifically about the croissants filled with “all sorts of madness”.

After asking the team what they’re most proud of, Matt left the shop with three croissants - the wagyu beef, chicken zinger and the chicken shwarma.

Starting with the chicken zinger, Matt said: “It’s absolutely amazing... My mind is just perplexed. I don’t know what to say.”

Next up was the wagyu beef, with cheese and pickles. After biting into it, he said: “Savoury croissants, bruv. Where do you go from here, what does mankind even do now?”

He added that it was the “level ten croissant boss”.

Last up from the savoury selection was the chicken shawarma, with lettuce and mayonnaise. He said: “It’s just better than a pitta. More texture, way more flavour, of course it’s buttery with layers of incredible pastry, and there’s a bit of pull to it - glue to the bite. The fillings are quite simple, but they work really really well.”

He added that it was “home comforts in a croissant”.

“They have absolutely smashed this,” he can be heard saying in the video. “If you’re looking for a fun, inventive snack. I don’t doubt someone will go ‘someone else has been doing this for ages’ - cool, I’ve never had it. Let me have my moment, please.”

Last up, Matt had a crème brûlée-filled crumpin for dessert. He said: “I never want to leave. It’s absolutely fantastic. I don’t understand why [the shop has] not got more people in it.”

Giving his final verdict, Matt game the venue a score of 8.3 out of 10, adding that the croissants were in the “elite” category.

He said: “On a serious note, I absolutely loved it. It was lighter - the croissant isn’t just a gimmicky swap out. Some will argue it is, if you’re from France you’ll say it’s absolute blasphemy. I don’t think so. That buttery, crunchy texture with that glutenous hold you get from a croissant, with some tasty ingredients, I think it’s brilliant.

“For a £6 snack on the move, I think this place is an absolute blinder. Fair play to them for doing it.”
