A new block of flats is planned on a Sheffield city centre street which is being made less ‘hostile’ to pedestrians.
Torsion Group of Leeds has permission to build 234 flats in a 17-storey tower on Tenter Street. It aims to complete the scheme in 2026.

The project comes amid huge change in the area. A 27-store block of flats is under construction on the former Sytner BMW garage site next door. And Broad Lane, Tenter Street and West Bar Green are being narrowed to one lane each way for vehicles and a separate bike lane and wider footpath are being installed.

A council report says it will be a ‘car-free development’. And the road remodelling will address the ‘pedestrian hostility’ in crossing Tenter Street and Broad Lane to get to the city centre.
It adds: “This scheme will introduce traffic calming, pedestrian realm improvements and crossing facilities adjacent to the site and also additional segregated cycle infrastructure.

Sheffield’s first Dutch-style roundabout is being built at the junction of West Bar and Corporation Street, set to give cyclists priority over cars.
