Sheffield United’s Harrison Burrows transfer interest analysed after reports of medical being booked

Any hopes Sheffield United may have of signing Peterborough wing-back Harrison Burrows this summer may rest on increased funds either from a takeover or the sale of one of their valuable assets, The Star has been told. United have been linked with the impressive left-footed defender all summer, with the Posh captain preparing to enter the final year of his current deal.

But Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony is renowned in football for driving a hard bargain and will not sell Burrows on the cheap, with a £5m transfer fee mooted for one of his side’s prized assets. Posh turned that figure down for Burrows two years ago and also rejected a bit from an unnamed club back in January, with Coventry one of a number of clubs also mentioned in connection with the 22-year-old.

United are in the market for a left-sided defender after releasing Max Lowe and opting against making loanee Yasser Larouci’s loan move permanent, with Rhys Norrington-Davies suffering another serious hamstring injury last season.

A report in the Peterborough Telegraph suggested today that Burrows was set for a medical at Bramall Lane this week, but The Star understands that transfer activity is on hold at the minute while work on the big Bramall Lane takeover continues. Boss Chris Wilder has already publicly stated that he is working with frees, loans and small fees as things stand, with the understanding that a top-up of funds would be needed to land Burrows - either from the US-led consortium interested in buying the Blades, or the sale of a high-profile asset.

MacAnthony further stirred the pot this week by replying to a Blades fan on Twitter, who had asked about the chances of Burrows and his Posh teammate Ronnie Edwards coming to Bramall Lane, with the cryptic post: “One out of two ain’t bad.” MacAnthony also used his Twitter account to pour scorn on talk of Posh signing Rochdale’s George Nevett, tweeting: “Don't believe everything out there.” Roughly nine hours later MacAnthony announced that Nevett had signed a four-year deal with Posh.

Burrows, a Posh academy graduate, has played 185 times for his boyhood club and was named League One player of the season after netting seven goals and adding 16 assists in 2023/24. He also scored twice at Wembley to help Posh win the Bristol Street Motors Trophy and is one of the most in-demand young players in English football this summer, with Celtic, Norwich and Brentford also linked.
