TO many casual observers the problem of drug taking is so widespread and ingrained that it appears beyond solution, leaving addicts wallowing in a world spiralling into grim despair and self pity.
But there are people with the commitment to take on what is an impossible task in the eyes of many, and are helping drug dependent people to beat their habits and to begin living worthwhile and fulfilling lives.
The Turning Point orgnisation's suc
cess is based on its open door policy, which offers help to anyone over the age of 18 who comes along and asks for support. That is clearly the right approach for much effort and many resources could be wasted trying to provide a new direction to someone who simply will not accept help.
The group deserves support for we all benefit when people are freed from the grip of drugs, which is at the basis of so much crime these days.
Anti-social action is gravest concernTHE public will welcome the early indication by the new leadership at Sheffield City Council that it intends to tackle anti-social behaviour as one of its key priorities. However, there will be a resigned feeling among many that they have heard it all before.
The Lib Dem leaders will soon find that it is one thing to declare its intention to achieve something, it is a very different matter to deliver it.
But the signs are that they intend to bring about change in the city, and there are few better ways than to cherry pick what must be most people's gravest concern.
