Plymouth Argyle hero Sam Cosgrove broke Sheffield Wednesday hearts at Home Park on Tuesday evening – but feels his side could have done more damage in an enthralling match.

The Birmingham City-owned Pilgrims loanee, not long ago heavily linked with a move to Wednesday, headed home in injury time to consign the Owls to defeat in a match they had the better of for large periods.

There was controversy even before the winner, with Michael Ihiekwe clearing off the line from a Cosgrove header he felt was over.

The 25-year-old forward was also brought down by Ihiekwe in the box, with the referee’s decision to not award a penalty sparking pandemonium on the home terraces.

“It's as clear-cut as a penalty comes but the main thing is we got the winner eventually,” Cosgrove said post-match.

“The anger that was reverberating around the ground was probably echoed on the pitch. I know that myself, the players and I'm sure the management were extremely frustrated, but sometimes that anger can be turned into motivation.”

Cosgrove was one of five substitutes made by Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher made that went some way to changing the game on an evening Wednesday manager Darren Moore copped flak for his changes.

The likes of Jordan Houghton, Niall Ennis and Cosgrove seemed to give the home side fresh impetus in contract to those of the Owls, who by the admission of defender Liam Palmer fell deeper as the match entered its final stages.

“The subs have made a difference again,” Cosgrove said. “I thought the boys up until the changes were absolutely excellent again.

“Sheffield Wednesday are a top side and we took them all the way. It probably just took some extra fresh legs, at the end of a tough and gruelling game, to get us over the line, and luckily we have done it.

“We have played pretty much all of the top sides so for us to come away with the points tally we have got, and to be sitting at the top of the table, up to now it's job done.

“But we are only a quarter of the way through the season so we need to hopefully keep this up and build on it.”
