A lot was made of the fact that Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy had a lot to prove when he arrived on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.

And the £10 million winger, who’s career had stalled in the North East, pulled up few trees in the opening months of life at Hillsborough, failing to follow up on an eye-catching debut performance against Barnsley that saw him score with his first touch.

Glimmers of promise have shown for the 24-year-old, but it is in the Owls’ last two performances – in impressive wins over Premier League Brighton and then-table-topping Yorkshire rivals Leeds United – that Murphy has been at his most effective.

The winger opened the scoring in the 87th minute in West Yorkshire and was a handful throughout.

And it’s a resurgence not lost on his team mates, who were quick to praise his efforts. Goalkeeper Cameron Dawson said: “I am delighted for Jacob.

“I thought he was terrific at Brighton and great against Leeds. He scores goals like that in training every day.

“He has an absolute hammer foot and I am delighted he showed everybody against Leeds how hard he can strike the ball because normally it is my fingers that take a pounding!”

“We have some excellent options out wide. Kads has been excellent. He has been great all season but it was time for him to have a little bit of a rest.

“It's a real team effort.”
