But when it comes to football, supporters love nothing more than a good away day – be it a trip to a decrepit lower league ground in the League Cup on a cold and wet Tuesday night or lapping it up at Anfield on Boxing Day.
The camaraderie, the craic, the train journeys, the boozy coach trips are the staple of supporting your team on a journey behind ‘enemy lines’.
And win, lose or draw, games away from home tend to stay long in the memory of fans up and down the country – and United fans are no different.
So, here are nine ‘best away days’ as suggested by Blades supporters on Twitter and Facebook.
1. MK Don 0-3 United, April 2017
United skipper Billy Sharp and his team-mates celebrate in front of 7,000 travelling Blades at Stadium MK after a 3-0 win for the League One champions. Lee Allen remembers the day well and wrote on Facebook: "There will be rarely many like it. It was party from start to finish." Andy Sykes agreed, saying: "Never seen anything quite like that." 2. Leicester 2-5 United, May 1990
Arguably one of the greatest days in the club's history as Dave Bassett's United clinched promotion to Division One in emphatic style with a 5-2 win over Leicester City at Filbert Street on May 5 1990. Dave Ward and Lee Beighton both nominated this game as their best ever away day on Facebook, but David Biggs Burbeary also says the relegation of arch-rivals Wednesday on the same day capped a memorable day for Blades fans everywhere. 3. Darlington 0-2 Sheffield United, May 1982
May 15 1982 certainly was a day to remember for the 11,000 Blades fans who descended on Darlington to watch United clinch the Division Four title with a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Bob Hatton and Keith Edwards. The official attendance at Feethams that day was 12,557 - the largest gate at the ground since 1969. On Facebook, James Shaw wrote: "Took over the whole town." And @S66Quack tweeted: "First away game, thought that was how they’d all be!" Photo: UGC
4. Peterborough United 0-4 Blades, April 1982
Thousands from the Steel City descended on London Road in Peterborough for another away day masterclass as the Blades' promotion juggernaut continued with a 4-0 win against the Posh. Peter Thompson was one of several Unitedites on Facebook who nominated this as their favourite game on the road. He wrote: "Their manager Peter Morris said they were going to thrash the Blades. How wrong was he?" Photo: JPI Media
