WELCOME to Catcliffe... a year on from the floods the village is determined to prove it hasn't lost its community spirit.
Asked what they would like to see as a permanent memorial to last June's disaster, villagers said a new welcome sign at the entrance to the community.

Trainees from local firm Morthyng Ltd and 2010 Rotherham Ltd have now completed a raised flower
bed which will house a new Welcome to Catcliffe sign.

Villagers also asked for a flower feature to be created around the Catcliffe Kiln, a historical former glassworks site.

Funds for both displays came from Rotary International Britain and Ireland which responded to the floods by setting up a relief fund, with donations coming in from clubs around the district.

Rotherham Rotary Club president Mike Sumption said: "The sign is a long overdue recognition of Catcliffe as an essential part of Rotherham, and Rotary has enjoyed working with the community, including Treeton, to help them erase some of the horrid memories of 12 months ago and help to restore pride in their area."

Florence Wilkins, of The Croft, Catcliffe, the first council tenant to move back into her home was among a party of residents who enjoyed days out paid for by Rotary.

She said: "The new display and sign is absolutely beautiful. I pass it on the way to the post office and each time I think how lovely it looks. It's a nice welcome to the village."

Teresa Butler, 2010's Director of Business Development, said: "The new sign will ensure that Catcliffe remains on the map indefinitely - this time for positive reasons."
