Published Date: 02 July 2008
FAN group Wednesdayite have received a written offer from takeover front man Geoff Sheard for their 10 per stake in the Owls.
It is set to lead to a ballot of Wednesdayite members and is another twist in the five-month saga. It is understood that the offer is 20p a share - the same amount agreed by Dave Allen in a deal already lined up.

Wednesdayite chairman Darryl Keys said: "First we have sought advice from our lawyers to ensure that we adhere to legal procedures and subject to that we are happy to ballot our members and hopefully get the go-ahead for a sale.

"Obviously It would have to be part of an overall deal that gives control to another party; if someone was just acquiring our shares and nobody else's then we would just be shuffling deckchairs."

Moves by Sheard to finalise the Allen deal and try to buy the 10 per cent stakes by Geoff Hulley and Keith Addy appear to be on hold until the Wednesdayite issue is resolved.

Rumours that Sheard held a meeting at Hillsborough with Hulley and Addy have been strongly denied. Former chairman Geoff Hulley told The Star that the claim was "balderdash", adding: "I have not spoken to him or met him; nor, I believe, has Keith."

Wednesdayite's leadership, before receiving the offer, had already submitted a list of questions to Sheard. Keys explained: "These are certainly not preconditions; they are various questions that we believe our members would want to ask.

"We have asked him to attend a meeting of members, which he has agreed to do, and he has also agreed to attend a final meeting at which members will be able to debate before the ballot is closed."

He said that it will take around a week to get paperwork to members; followed by the 14-day period stipulated in the group's rules before the ballot is closed.

Keys added: "No-one can accuse us of delaying matters. The procedure that we would have to go through has been well known right from the start. We also offered to organise a ballot at an earlier stage, but were told there was no requirement by the other party for us to do so."

He said that some of the questions raised by Wednesdayite have been answered in the offer letter, though not all: "I don't know what questions he will be prepared to answer at a meeting. I think there's a mood for change. I'd like to think that members will get enough information from him for him to achieve his objectives."

Meanwhile, Wednesday have confirmed the six-month loan signing of Chelsea midefielder Jimmy Smith.

Along with a few thousand other loyal fans of the Owls, I do sincerely hope this latest offer for the club goes through. If they manage to scupper this opportunity, and from the outside looking in at least, they do seem to be dragging their heels as the finishing post is in sight, then the fans will deserve some explanation.
Other clubs appear to have taken similar business in their stride, why not Wednesday?

Think the takeover talk just washes over me now - if it happens fantastic, but we've supposedly been close far too many times to get excited about it now.

For me the more interesting news is a single line at the buried at the bottom of the story - the signing of Jimmy Smith. Laws has now got a trio of hard-working, young central midfielders without spending any cash. Excellent work by the manager. Whatever happens with the takeover I hope he's given the opportunity to show that he can turn this club around, with or without money to spend.

Completely agree with you oz_owl. Brian Laws is assembling a young, aggressive, positive midfield with obvious financial constraints. I am 100% behind the manager and the route he is taking during the current tranfer period. Just think what he could do with proper funding at his disposal. UP THE OWLS!

Finally things are looking up finally the deal may be done the finishing line is in sight and laws assembling a young fit hungry team and with sheards finances it only adds to the prospect of what is goin to happen but one thing is for sure the future of the club is finally looking promising up the owls

Patience, patience, more patience, Owls fans need it in abundance. Once again the progress appears to have been slowed down, due to the rules ,regulations, polling, surveying, debating and balloting supposedly needed by Wednesdayite. Hadn't they heard the rumors of a takeover proposal in the offing! and taken contingency actions, LIKE JUST IN CASE! Debating, balloting and pre-conditions could have all been approved weeks ago. Bet Allen,Hulley and Addy are not now going to contemplate there navels for several weeks before saying YES to a financial takeover of SWFC. Saddest part of this,is, that the handcuffs will still be on Brian Laws at a time when he could use some financial muscle. Good job he is so successful in his loan and free signings. Agree with leeowls1 comments totally!

I can not believe that the wednesdayayite's are going to take another 14 days to get this sorted. We need these people to realise that we need cash and quick. These will be the same so called wednesday fans that if this doesnt go through and we struggle again next season will be calling from Brian Laws head. Wake up and get this sorted ASAP. Every other club that gets taken over does so quickly and easily but not us, are these wednesdayayites even wednseday fans, the problem is you give people a little power and it goes to there head, give us proper wednesday fans what we want and go away. Up the owls and up Brian Laws and lets get the season off to a flyer.

Any new investor knew the time restraints on Wednesdayite voting and they offered to ballot early ,the ballot will go ahead and im sure the members will agree to the sale ,mines a yes vote

Ridiculous comment, Owl down under. If Dave Allen had kept the shares & then sold them on to the consortium, Dave Allen would have pocketed the share money. At least with Wednesdayite it will find its way back to the club or local community.
The reason it's taking so long is because so many different individuals & organisations own Wednesday shares. At most clubs there is already a majority shareholding.
