THE intention of Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws to seek a "high energy" approach within his side next season will see him bring in a Chelsea youngster as his first signing next week.
Midfielder Jimmy Smith, 21, is set to join the Owls on a season-long loan and he is set to link up with the squad when they report back next week.

Smith has been on loan at QPR where he made 22 appearances and also at Norwich. He will be on a season-long loan assuming everything is agreed.
He is well regarded at Chelsea and was a regular in their reserve team having come through the club's youth academy.

Laws said earlier this week that he wanted a side that was ultra-fit and with high energy for next season and he would be putting an emphasis on fitness.

There are likely to be other additions as Laws seeks to add to his squad.

The Owls have fixed admission price at £10 for the Carling Cup tie with Rotherham United at Hillsborough on Tuesday, August 12. It will be £5 for concessions. The club want to avoid large queues on the night and urge fans to get tickets beforehand. They will be on sale to season ticket holders from July 16 and go on general sale from July 21.

The club's away kit launch has been put back top July 18. They say it is due to delays in production and "unforeseen circumstances".
Ex-Owls striker Grant Holt has joined League Two club Shrewsbury for £130,000 from Nottingham Forest.

Opening day opponents Burnley have made another signing. He is 19-year-old midfielder Kevin McDonald who has agreed to join them in a £500,000 deal from Dundee. he follows on £1.3 million striker Martin Paterson from Scunthorpe.

"Kevin is 6ft 3ins, mobile and a great physique and he ticks every box and is one who will get better," said Clarets boss Owen Coyle.
They have also signed Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny from Coronel Bolognesi.

Well done Brian Laws. 21 years of age, ours for the season, a Premier League squad member. Thats a tick in every box as far as I can see (and as far as current finances allow). These kind of players will bust a gut, recover quickly from weekend knocks and niggles, and hopefully bring an infectious winning mentality with them. Long may this approach continue until boardroom circumstances change. UP THE OWLS!!

Way to go pleased that every effort is made to recruit young 'uns lets go from strength to strength forget the 30's yr old players that have had it they are injury prone not the players that will help the Owls cause for next season right on BL right on....

Great Signing hopefully we continue down that road, However please tell me that Horsefield is just a rumour (The Mirror 24/06/08) after all your looking for a fit squad for next season.

As usual, signing lined up. We never have anything signed and sealed. Same with o`connor, lined up. Other clubs like Burnley have SIGNED players, we just talk about signings, and they don`t happen. Just like the takeover, all mouth and no substance. Just like the delayed away shirt launch, happens every year, Accrington Stanley will have got their shirts on time. I`ve bought my season ticket, I`m not going to get it, they`ve got my cash, DECISIVE action, something that`s been lacking for years at S6. The club website that only tells you about commercial activities, absolutely sod all about football. What a load of dithering half wits we have got at Hillsborough.

Good old Barnsley. SIGNED Ian Hulme for 1.2 m. Note that they have SIGNED him, not next week, not next month, SIGNED him. I am in despair!!!!!!!!

Well, that's TWO midfielders now in the squad, i.e. Smith(provided it goes through)and McAllister. Aren't we doing well????
I do agree with most of the comments on this page, that we are recruiting younger players, it IS the way to go.

gold coast owl , good news at last eh ? do you think the powers that be read our comments !!
one more season long loanee and one or two young midfield purchases and i'm sure it will be a positive season and one we can all enjoy with fresh young legs that can stand up to the rigours of a full domestic season and not give up after a game or two !
COME ON THE WEDNESDAY THIS IS GOING TO BE OUR YEAR !

Hume for 1.2m is an awful signing dizzy, doubt he got into double figures for the season, leicester had awesome defence, couldnt score. O'Connor can't sign till his contracts up with burnley thats generally what happens with free transfers (30th june)

penrhyn bay owl, good news indeed. The powers that be should read these comments as there are a heck of a lot of supporters who post comments on these articles who talk common sense. Agree with you Wesp, 1.2m is an awful lot of money for a striker who's team was relegated with one of the best defences in the division. One or two more like this, throw in a fit Steve Watson as the 'experienced campaigner' and it's looking a lot brighter. I'm not Watson's greatest fan but if he stays fit he is competent in midfield and can help guide the youngsters when it gets hot and heavy.

my mate is a burnley season ticket holder and is totally gutted that o'connor is on the move . he describes him as tough , uncomprimising , big heart , end to end , 100% type of player but lacking in the skill dept. lets just hope those who are signed to play around him tick that particular box !! certainly the boy from chelsea sounds an exciting prospect and just what us fans want to hear .
this will be our year .
COME ON GOLD COAST OWL , COME ON THE WEDNESDAY .
