Sheffield church to build extension after councillors approve plans

St Luke’s Church, on Blackbrook Road and Blackbrook Drive, at Lodge Moor, was granted planning permission to create a side extension for a small chapel at the ground floor with an extra meeting room above, a front extension to accommodate a cafe and internal works designed to improve the flexibility of the space.
The council’s planning and highways committee voted in favour of the scheme at a meeting this week.

Hide AdCouncillor Andrew Sangar said: “Clearly St Luke’s is a very successful church and as we have already heard, it reaches out to the community and its community rooms are very well used. It’s fairly unusual that a faith building wants to expand because they have extra users so I think that is a real positive.
“Overall I welcome the application, it’s a really successful church and community building and this will make it more successful.”
Councillor Jayne Dunn, chair of the committee, added: “I agree it’s been well needed, more community buildings.”
The unanimous decision supported an officer’s recommendation to approve with conditions.

Hide AdA travel directive was also voted for, for the community to work with together on a sustainable travel plan.
This followed 18 letters of objection and two petitions against the plans with a total of 71 signatures. There was just one letter of support from the public.
Concerns raised included privacy, parking, traffic and road safety.
