Two female police officers have been attacked in a South Yorkshire village.

The incident happened at around 2am this morning (November 26) in Monk Bretton near Barnsley.

The two officers challenged a man who had been seen driving erratically on Lamb Lane, who then became agressive and attacked the two officers.

The suspect allegedly forced one officer’s head to the floor and struck the other officer’s face.

Both officers attended Barnsley District Hospital to be checked over but were later discharged and are now recovering at home.

A 32-year-old man from Barnsley was arrested under suspicion of assaulting an emergency services worker, as well as driving offences.

A/Chief Superintendent Sarah Poolman, District Commander for Barnsley, said: "We have absolutely zero tolerance for those who choose to be violent towards our officers and we will always take action against those who do so, making sure they are put through the criminal justice system to face the consequences of their actions.

"The officers involved are both being visited today and we will provide ongoing assistance to support their recovery.”
