The police watchdog has been alerted to an incident in Rotherham where a man’s body was discovered 12 hours after officers found a crashed car on the same road.

South Yorkshire Police officers responded to reports of a collision on Long Road, Brampton-en-le-Morthen, at 8.30pm on Tuesday and found a black Citroen Picasso which had been involved in a crash.

South Yorkshire Police said ‘officers attended the scene and conducted a search of the area to understand the circumstances surrounding the collision’.

The car was later recovered.

But at 8.30am yesterday – 12 hours later – police received a call stating that the body of a man had been discovered on the same road.

A 74-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and Long Road was closed for police enquiries and an examination to be carried out.

South Yorkshire Police said: “The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.”
