Park Square Sheffield: Man, 18, arrested after 'stolen' car is abandoned on tram tracks following police chase

A teenager is in custody today a car was abandoned on tram tracks in Sheffield city centre, causing major disruption, following a police chase.

Police said today that officers had set off in pursuit after the driver failed to stop for police in the East Bank Road area of the city yesterday, Sunday, February 5, at around 4.45pm. They said that following a short pursuit the car had stopped on the tracks at Park Square.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Checks on the car, a Ford Fiesta, showed that it had been reported stolen. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop and possession of a controlled drug. He is currently in custody.”

The incident at the busy tram junction caused travel chaos on Sunday evening, with Supertram reporting heavy disruption and First Bus accepting passengers’ tram tickets on its services to prevent them being stranded.
