A man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and false imprisonment after police in Sheffield stopped a car and found a knife and drugs inside.

Officers in Burngreave said the driver of the vehicle, which contained multiple occupants, was already wanted by police in connection with allegations of kidnap and false imprisonment when the car was pulled over this week. He was arrested on suspicion of those alleged offences, and when officers searched the car and its occupants they found class B drugs and a knife.

The driver subsequently failed a roadside drug test, said police, and was further arrested on suspicion of drug driving and possession of an offensive weapon. Police today said he remains under investigation.

South Yorkshire Police revealed in September last year that one in 10 drivers stopped during a week-long crackdown on drink and drug driving were found to be over the limit for alcohol or drugs.
