A KEY member of the Sheffield Tigers backroom speedway team has died in a horror smash which killed a biker and pillion passenger in a collision between a motorbike and a lorry in South Yorkshire.
The names of the two killed on the A631 between Maltby and Tickhill have not yet been released by police who are still trying to notify all family members.

Tigers' spokesman Neil Machin said the team, who suffered a heavy defeat last night after hearing the news, had wanted to postpone their meeting but it was too short notice.

He said: "It is a real tragedy and we are all stunned. No-one really wanted to do the meeting, but we had to just get on with it."

The collision happened on a winding stretch of road which has been the scene of a number of accidents, some of them serious.

Police are still investigating the crash but say the motorcycle was heading out of Maltby when it was in collision with the lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

Emergency services were called to the scene.

The lorry driver was suffering from shock.

Police immediately closed the road and urged motorists to find an alternative route.

They are also appealing for witnesses to the accident, at around 11am yesterday.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Two people on the motorcycle suffered fatal injuries as a result of a collision with a lorry. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the accident or have any information to contact us."

Anyone with information should ring the police accident witness helpline on 0114 2202970.

Sharon and Darren were two of the most genuine people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting in Speedway.
An absolute tragedy and very sad loss, our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.
