YOUR VERDICT: Snake Pass emergency phones

"I can't believe that in the year 2008 with all the technology we have available to us that a road as treacherous as the A57 Snake Pass can be, even in dry weather, has no emergency phones or mobile phone masts.
"Surely anything we can do to save lives must be done and if we can't get a phone mast without spoiling the view then so be it but I think the answer lies in roadside emergency phones like we have on the motorways.

"If there are no plans to install any of these then the Derbyshire County Council should be given a kick up the backside before someone dies."

Kevan Smith, aged 51, Manor.

"It seems nonsense to place a landscape skyline as a higher priority than human life.

"It's all very well for Derbyshire County Council to advise motorists to carry a waterproof coat and shoes in case of an emergency but, as both the Derbyshire Police and Snake Pass Inn landlady Sandra Atkin have indicated, in the case of accidents every minute counts when treating someone who's seriously injured.

"In this day and age, it is not good enough for the council that covers the Peak District to say "it does not provide emergency phones".

When lives are at stake somebody has to take some protective action. And in this case that 'somebody' surely ought to be Derbyshire County Council."
Jon Power, aged 64, Broomhill.

"I believe mobile phones are a life saving necessity nowadays and masts must be installed wherever the signals are weak.

"I travel over the Pennines regularly to visit my family and I know if I broke down at night, then my Samaritan would be the mobile phone and I dread to think what would happen if the reception was not good enough.

"I remember years ago, when i was coming back from Blackpool and saw a car overturned, and in those days there were no mobiles.

"After helping the lone female driver out of the vehicle and while other people stayed with her and her dog, I drove to the next public house and asked them to call the ambulance.

"Luckily, she was not badly injured, just shook up, and, if I had a phone in those days, then it would have saved vital minutes and emergency services could have been there quicker.

"Yes, the phone masts must take priority over the countryside, because they save lives and lives are more important than our country's landscape."

Zeb Khaliq, aged 48, Rotherham.

"I feel very strongly about the lack of reception in and around the Peak District - I feel that the safety of travellers should be paramount.

"As a person with diabetes, if I was to go into a hypoglycaemic episode I would have no means of contacting anyone to come out.

"A walk or run would be out of the question - apart from the fact one should rest when having an episode, I have spinal arthritis which prevents me running or walking any distance."

Mollie Hickman, aged 65, Handsworth.
