South Yorkshire's coronavirus death toll passes 1,000, as five more patients die in Sheffield and four more in Doncaster

The coronavirus death toll in South Yorkshire has passed 1,000 after 12 more people died across Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley.

Another five people died with Covid-19 at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals trust, which runs the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General hospitals, taking the total hospital death toll in the city to 332 since the pandemic began.

A further four coronavirus deaths were confirmed at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals trust, and three more Covid-19 patients died at Barnsley Hospital, but no additional deaths were announced in Rotherham.

There have now been 275 Covid-19 hospital deaths in Doncaster, 171 in Barnsley and 225 in Rotherham, which together with the deaths in Sheffield gives a total for South Yorkshire of 1,003.

That figure does not include people who died with coronavirus at care homes or elsewhere in the community.

Across England, another 207 people died, taking the total number of confirmed reported deaths at hospitals in England to 32,117.

The highest number of daily deaths occurred at hospitals in the North West, where 77 more people died, followed by the North East & Yorkshire, with 44 deaths.

The latest patients to die were aged between 36 and 101, with all except six – aged 60 to 93 – having had known underlying health conditions.

The latest deaths, announced by NHS England today, Tuesday, October 27, were all confirmed in the 24 hours between 4pm on October 25 and 4pm yesterday, Monday, October 26, but may have taken place earlier and only now been recorded in the national statistics.
