OWNERS of a Sheffield nightclub were due to find out today whether they can change their opening times and allow alcohol to be consumed in the main band room.
Corporation on Milton Street in the city centre wants to be allowed to open from 4pm rather than 7pm when there is live music.

The owners have also applied for permission to allow people to take alcohol into the main band room when there are live
gigs.

They are currently banned because children are allowed to watch bands, but owners claims this leads to people downing their drinks too quickly.

But South Yorkshire Police have objected to the changes.

In a report to the council licensing board police say when a review of the club's license was carried out in June officers raised concerns about the number of children getting into the club for over 18s events and found drunk outside.

Why not open at 4pm.As an active pensioner I find late-nights hard-going.It would be rather nice to listen to the band playing in the afternoon.Come 6pm and I need to be home for tea. However a few deckchairs could prove attractive.

I think that if this goes ahead it only encourages and condones underage drinking. The club were lucky they didn't have to close earlier in the year for turning a blind eye to under 18's drinking there.

The police should not be so hasty to exclude the youngsters from the club. With skyrocketing interest rates and cost of living rises daily, the under 18s are the only economic group likely to have sufficient money to buy beer and spirits, money desperately needed to revitalise the UK economy.
