A WOMAN suffered a suspected broken ankle after plunging 20ft into a Sheffield city centre river - the third person to fall into the water at exactly the same place in a week.
She climbed over a wall, near the Radio Sheffield building on Leadmill Lane, in the early hours of today, not realising there was a 20ft drop on the other side.

Last Monday another woman had to be rescued from the same place after jumping over the wall thinking it was a short cut.

And the following day a man climbed over the same wall and also landed in the water below.

Firefighters had to lift the latest casualty to safety using an aerial ladder platform before she could be taken to hospital.

Surely we should ensure that our students are safe from harm. Many are away from home for the first time and are utterly confused by busy roads, high walls and fast-flowing rivers.
The Induction days attempt to warn them of urban dangers such as unprotected sex, excessive hamburger eating and swallowing toxic substances but the city poses many challenges to these fresh-faced newcomers.
It may be helpful if the Council displayed warning notices -perhaps in crayon - highlighting the hazards of modern city-life.I think Hallam University may be eager to provide courses leading to degrees for the current crop of self-mutilating students occupying the high walls along our riversides.
