WORK has started on a £1 million sports and community development in Thorne.
Builders have moved on site on fields next to Coulman Road, where they will be working on a facility which will include a changing room and community centre.

The scheme is being built by Thorne and Moorends Town Council with grants from organisations including the Football Foundation and the Coalfield Regeneration Trust.

Some of the cash is from money paid to the community by Helios Developments as a condition of planning permission for their Nimbus Park development in Thorne.

Thorne Town Council leader Martin Williams said: "It's a huge project for a town council, and I think it is going to be a magnificant facility."

Work is expected to be completed in December. Work is also being carried out to improve the drainage on the sports pitches.
