RESIDENTS in Rossington are being urged to sign up for two new fitness programmes from the NHS this summer.
A running course for beginners - Run 4 Fun - is aimed at getting people on their marks who have thought about taking up running but not got around to it.
Experienced coach Christine Stimpson will guide runners through lots of fun activities that w
ill build up their fitness levels gradually.
Sam Fox, area development worker for the Doncaster Choosing Health Partnership who has set up the course, said: "There has already been quite a bit of interest and it's the ideal opportunity for someone who's often contemplated running to actually get started. As well as improving fitness it's a great way to meet new people, enjoy yourself and relieve stress."
Meanwhile, residents who would like to be more active but aren't ready for full exercise sessions are being encouraged to try a scheme called Chair-Activ - a weekly class in which participants stay seated, run by Choosing Health and Age Concern Doncaster.
Linda Tyrrell, the charity's Active in Later Life development officer, described the class as ideal for beginner exercisers, people with mobility restrictions or those whose want to get back into doing some physical activity.
Both courses will be run from Rossington Miners Welfare Learning Centre. The Run 4 Fun group meets on Mondays at 6pm. Sessions, which cost a £1, include free refreshments. Chair-Activ! is at 5pm every Wednesday and is £1.50 per session.
