MAYOR Martin Winter is to face a vote of no confidence at the next meeting of Doncaster council on July 14.
His former colleagues in the Labour Party are believed to be considering backing the call for censure.

The motion has been moved by Coun David Hughes, of the Alliance of Independent Members and seconded by party colleague Coun Mick Maye, who will
be the Alliance's mayoral candidate in next year's election.

It reads: "The elected members of this council and the electorate of Doncaster are growing more dissatisfied with the style of leadership and conduct of the elected mayor.

"To protect the integrity of the council and elected members and the communities they represent, this council supports a vote of no confidence in the elected mayor's style of leadership and conduct, which conflicts with the best interests of this council."

Alliance leader Garth Oxby told The Star: "I have been asked on numerous occasions by numerous people, as the leader of the Alliance, to move a motion of no confidence against the mayor.

"In the past the Alliance's position has been that it should be the responsibility of the Labour group to move the motion - and I still feel that's the case. However, they haven't done it, so we have."

Mick Jameson, spokesman for the authority's Labour group, said he was considering backing the no confidence vote.

He said: "The issue will be put to the members as will everything else that is on the agenda and then we will make our decision.

"I will determine my vote on the basis of the group's decision. At the moment I'm considering supporting it but that's not a final decision."

Edwin Simpson, leader of Doncaster's Liberal Democrats, said the motion had the backing of his party.

"The reason we are supporting the no confidence call is quite simply that we have no confidence in the way the mayor has been running the council," Mr Simpson told The Star.

"In the past he has had a 100 per cent Labour cabinet and that was not successful.

"Now as his term as mayor comes to an end and he finds himself in dispute with Labour he has tried to suck in other parties to prop him up."

Mayor Winter said: "I will respond to the motion at full council on July 14."
