CHIPPIE Robert Pearce has been saying a fond farewell to Freddy his frying range at the Woodseats Fisheries on Chesterfield Road.
"It's too slow. I've sold him to a chippie in Hull where he'll find life easier," says Robert.
In comes Billy, a
state of the art three pan fryer, his eleventh.
Ex-seaman Robert, now 49, who started in the family business at eight, has always named his ranges like ships.
"There was Walter after Walter Hottlebottle in the Dandy or Beano, Carl after Carl Gilbert, centre-forward for Rotherham United, Lester after the jockey, Shakespeare because we were on Bard Street, Archie on The Wicker and Rocky when I had a shop on Gibraltar Street."
Sydney was named after his favourite port, Cliff when he had a shop in Attercliffe and Michelle after his wife.
And Billy? "After Billy Whizz," he grins.
A corking treat
WHAT a corking treat! Three lucky art lovers will each receive a bottle of champagne over the three days of the Great Sheffield Art Show next week.
As it's the 21st anniversary of the show a bottle will be handed to one visitor on each of the three opening days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 11-13).
The event, at the Octagon centre, is expected to attract 6,000 visitors.
Cutlet correction
OOPS! The Cutlet Concerto is in Sheffield Cathedral NOT the City Hall tomorrow (Fri).
