Pandemic prompts record profits surge at South Yorkshire mattress company

Mattress Online says turnover and profits have doubled in the year to June, with turnover up to £34.5m from £17.1m and £15m the year before that. The company did not disclose profits, which were £1.7m last year.
Staff numbers have increased from 38 to 61 in the same period.

Hide AdThe firm claims it is now the largest online independent mattress retailer in the UK and one of the country’s fastest growing firms.
It is solely owned by chief executive Steve Adams who founded it in 2003.
He said they planned to open seven stores over the next three years, alongside an existing traditional showroom in Rotherham
He added: “We are planning to open more stores when many retailers are closing down. Physical stores are not dead and I believe Mattress Online can offer the next day delivery and competitive prices you get from our online offering in a more traditional setting.”

Hide AdThe company has hired Michael Jervis as head of digital, who was previously at Jet2, former Morphy Richards marketing manager Annaliese Curtis as head of marketing, and Craig Roberts as head of finance from Exemplar Health Care. Just before the pandemic it took on chief operating officer Martin Eastwood from manufacturer Silentnight.
The UK bed and mattress market is worth £2.2bn.
Rotherham is also home to bedspring maker Wolf Components, which set up in 2018.
Last month the firm announced it was was installing a second new Eurobend frame making machine due to increasing demand.
