A GROUP of Belarusian school children affected by aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster spent an afternoon with Barnsley firefighters as part of charity-funded visit to the town.
The 14 pupils, from School Number 2 in Kamanets, who live in an area still blighted by the nuclear disaster, enjoyed a tour of Barnsley Fire Station and a drill demonstration by firefighters.
They were then each given a smoke alarm to take back to their families and be fitted by the fire service in Belarus.
It is the first time the children, all aged 10, have been out of their own country. The visit has been made possible by the Barnsley link of the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline charity (CCLL).
