Call to abolish top council job
THE position of chief executive of Sheffield city council should be abolished and replaced with a powerful directly elected supremo, a top Tory has said.
Lord Heseltine, a former Conservative Deputy Prime Minister, said big cities like Sheffield need a strong political leader who is answerable to the electorate.
Having a Ken Livingstone-stlye figure in charge of every big city, serving four year terms, would make the job of council chief executive redundant - held by Sir Bob Kerslake in Sheffield - the peer argued.
