Tributes flood in for 'loved' and 'formidable' Sylvia Dooley as wife of Sheffield football legend dies

Sheffield United confirmed Sylvia’s passing, who was the widow of former Sheffield United chairman and football hero Derek, in a statement.
The Blades commended her for the ‘constant support’ she gave to her husband after his Sheffield Wednesday career was cut short when his infected leg had to be amputated.

Hide AdDerek passed away on March 5, 2008 and his funeral at Sheffield Cathedral was attended by Neil Warnock and Dave Bassett, who both worked with him, alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and Dickie Bird.
In a message, the club said: “Staff at Sheffield United are saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Sylvia Dooley, widow of former Blades chairman, Derek.
“They say that behind every great man is a great woman, and there was never a truer description of Sylvia.
“A constant source of support to her husband in the darkest of times, she supported him through the trauma the horrendous injury that finished his career at Sheffield Wednesday and changed his life forever.

Hide Ad“Sylvia and Derek were a formidable team, and she was ever by his side during his tenure at Bramall Lane, continuing to cheer the Blades on from the stands after her husband's passing 12 years ago.
“She was a much liked and loved figure to the club staff who had the privilege of knowing her and the thoughts of the SUFC family are with Martin, Suzanne and the Dooley family at this saddest of times.”
