The deal should be confirmed before the January transfer window closes at 11pm, with forward Connor Wickham also expected to move back to Sheffield from Crystal Palace, six years after his last loan spell here.
But what would former Rangers star Windass - son of Hull City legend Dean, who also had a spell at Wednesday – offer the Owls and how would he fit into Monk’s side? Let’s take a look.
Style of play

Hide AdPredominantly an attacking midfielder that can operate down the middle or from the left, Windass has bags of trickery and is a keen passer of the ball with high ball retention stats.
Standing at five-foot-nine, the 26-year-old is strong and tenacious, using his athleticism to get around the pitch both in attack and defence.
He can also act as a centre-forward and has done so on six occasions for the Latics this season, scoring twice. He has two further goals from midfield.
What’s he done?
Falling out of the youth system at Huddersfield Town as a youngster, Windass played on a semi-professional basis for Harrogate Railway before signing professional terms with Accrington Stanley aged 19.

He played a key role in Rangers’ successful return to the Scottish top tier before moving on to Wigan in a £2m move in 2018.
Where would he fit in?
Monk has been clear of the fact he wants added firepower, especially after the injury of Steven Fletcher, and as mentioned Windass has played as a centre-forward.
Whether or not he is chosen to play there or in his more accustomed midfield role would remain to be seen.
