In total, 40 of SWFC’s 58 Championship goals were scored by Wednesday players who’ve since left, or are set to leave, the club, while 16 of their league assists this season are credited to those who – as things stand – won’t be part of the setup next season.
Steven Fletcher, who’s been linked with Celtic, got 13 league goals and two assists in his 27 games, while Jacob Murphy – a loanee from Newcastle United – ended his spell with nine goals and four assists.

Hide AdAtdhe Nuhiu (6 goals, 3 assists), Josh Windass (3 goals), Connor Wickham (2 goals), Fernando Forestieri (2 goals, 1 assist), Morgan Fox (2 goals, 1 assist), Sam Hutchinson (1 goal, 1 assist), Sam Winnall (1 goal), Kiean Lee (3 assists) and Alessio Da Cruz (1 assist) also contributed, and Lucas Joao, who left last year, got a goal as well. Jordan Rhodes – who scored three – is the only forward remaining.
Speaking about recruitment following the final-day defeat at the hands of Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough, Monk said, “There is a transition coming and we need to bring in fresh blood into the group… We need to make sure, moving forward, that we know what we can do and, hopefully, that clarification will come very, very soon.
“We know what type of players we need to bring in. Parts will start to move a little bit quicker now we have reached the end of the season. Hopefully we can get the right targets that can help the players who are already here and be more consistent and better than what we have shown in the second half of the season.”
All of the aforementioned players have seen their contracts end, loans expire or are – currently – not set to extend for next season, and losing the scorers of almost 70% of their goals last season will certainly be reason enough for Monk to have a striker on top of his SWFC shopping list.
