Owls captain, Barry Bannan, has helped a local charity drive blitz passed their target of £500 as they seek to provide meals for young kids across the city, becoming the latest footballer to play his part following the incredible work being done by Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.
Rashford has gained major plaudits for the campaigning he’s done with regards to free school meals across the country, and now ‘Baz’ has done his bit on a local level.

Hide AdDaniel Barton, of Mentalmate - a group that helps people with mental health problems through the power of boxing and talking – spoke to The Star about their cause and the shock of Bannan’s generous donation.
He said, “We originally had planned to feed 50 children per day in partnership with Maverick Stars Trust… I shared this plan across social media and had a few queries about how people could also get involved in terms of both food and money donations. So I set up a fundraiser for anyone who wanted to help us reach more children.
“I set up the fundraiser and tagged a few players in it on Instagram including Barry in the hope they may share it to get us a bit more exposure… Barry then liked the post, and five minutes later – to my shock – I received an email from GoFundMe saying Barry had donated £500.
“He’s an absolute legend in my eyes, he didn't have to donate anything but he did and I will be forever grateful to him.”

Hide AdBarton went on to say, “We set an initial target of £500, which Barry reached by himself. This donation allows us to provide at least 250 more meals to children across the city that need them. We have now also launched our partnership with FoodWorks Sheffield and Maverick Stars Trust to put the meals in eight community hub locations across the city.
“The more we raise on the fundraiser, the more children we can give a free meal too.”
