“Nothing else is acceptable” – Strong words from Garry Monk as Sheffield Wednesday chase three final points against Middlesbrough

Wednesday face Boro at home tomorrow evening in the final game of the 2019/20 season, and they’ll be hoping to put their poor Hillsborough form behind them as they seek a first victory at S6 since February.
Depending on what happens with their ongoing case against the English Football League, the Owls may need one point, three points or no points to maintain their place in the Championship next year, but Monk says that it’s not just about that – it’s about making sure that they end this season on a high.

Hide AdSpeaking to the media, the SWFC boss said, “All I’ve said to the players at the end was that, in this last game, nothing is acceptable apart from three points. For a number of reasons.
“The main reasons are our home form, what we’ve been doing, and the fact that we owe it to ourselves, to our fans, to everyone. It won’t make up for all of it, but we have to finish at home with a win for three points.
“The demand is always for three points, no matter what is going on… That’s the mentality that I expect to see. It won’t make amends for the season, but it’s vitally important that we finish with that positive at home.
“We’re going to play against a team who’ll be desperate for the points. We have to make sure of, and I expect to see, a higher determination than Middlesbrough.”

They can still stay up with a defeat, but are then relying on other results going their way.
The Owls and Boro face off at 7.30pm tomorrow as the 2019/20 season finally draws to a close.
