Thompson, who made 37 appearances for the Blades in the 80s after a trophy-laden career for Liverpool, says the football authorities in England should have finishing the domestic campaign, possibly in the summer, at the ‘very top of their agenda’ following its suspension because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The 66-year-old former midfielder made his comments just a day after UEFA announced this summer’s European Championships would be postponed by 12 months because of the pandemic – opening the way for suspended leagues to be concluded.

“There’s relegation and who is going to play in the Champions League next season. There are so many problems to sort out.
“That’s why I’m thinking the best way is to come up with a formula of how to complete the season, however long it takes and whenever it does. Let’s do that.
“Then let’s push back when we start the new season and push on then. The end of the season, push that on a little bit more.”

When the season was suspended on Friday, the Blades had just 10 games remaining of a remarkable first campaign back in the Premier League which could now be played to a conclusion behind closed doors – a situation Thompson would have no problem with.
“If it is in empty stadiums, so be it,” said Thompson.
“At least everybody will know where we are and we can get the season over and done with. If it’s June or July, we can do it in a three-week period and then everybody knows where they finish in the Premier League and who will be getting relegated.”
