Villa’s spending during the summer transfer window reached £80m when Traore, previously of Chelsea, arrived in a £17m deal from Lyon ahead of this evening’s Premier League fixture at Villa Park.
Despite being signed to form a new look strike force with Ollie Watkins, who became the most expensive player in Villa’s history earlier this month, Smith could be tempted to leave Traore on the bench for the meeting with United. However, speaking after the Burkino Faso international was officially unveiled before training on Saturday, Smith refused to provide any clues about his selection plans as he attempted to keep Chris Wilder guessing.

Traore’s ability is not in question, having made his debut for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League and impressing during a spell at Ajax on loan. However, the centre-forward’s confidence has waned of late, scoring only four times in 35 outings for Lyon last term. Smith’s ability to rebuild that, with Watkins a certain starter against United, having scored during Villa’s Carabao Cup success over Burton Albion last week. Matty Cash, who interested United before joining Villa, is also set to take part.
