And if Chris Wilder’s men pull off a shock win they will be repeating a feat achieved on April 2 1994 when a brace from Jostein Flo cancelled out Ian Rush’s early effort to secure all three points for Dave Bassett’s struggling side. Here’s the United side which won on Merseyside nearly 26 years ago.
1. Simon Tracey
Tracey spent 15 years at Bramall Lane having joined the Blades from Wimbledon in 1988. He played more than 300 games for United and was part of the team promoted from the old Third Division in the 1988-89 season. Tracey was an ever-present during the following season when Dave Bassett's side went up to old First Division. He retired in 2003 and is now a coach at Northampton Town. Photo: Craig Prentis
2. Carl Bradshaw
Right-back Bradshaw started his career with bitter rivals Wednesday but it's at United where he is best remembered, clocking up more than 140 appearances for the Bramall Lane outfit between 1989 and 1994. He also starred for Manchester City, Wigan Athletic and Norwich City in a career which drew to a close at non-league Alfreton Town in 2005. He qualified as a bricklayer in Sheffield after retiring from the game. Photo: Sheffield Newspapers Ltd
3. Roger Nilsen
Norwegian international left-back Nilsen signed for Dave Bassett's United in November 1993 for a fee of £500,000 from Viking FK. He became a popular figure at Bramall Lane and made 166 appearances for the Blades before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 1999. He retired as a player in 2003 and is currently coaching Fløya's women's side in his native Norway. Photo: Sheffield Newspapers Ltd
4. Brian Gayle
Skipper Gayle became a popular figure at Bramall Lane after joining the club from Ipswich Town for a then club record £750,000 in September 1991. He clocked up 119 appearances for the Blades before leaving for Exeter City on a free transfer in 1996. He hung up his boots in 2001. Photo: MB/MC/SR
