The Blades had David McGoldrick to thank for the crucial goal in a game that represented little more than pride for Paul Heckingbottom’s team, but that could have worrying ramifications for Albion.
Sheffield United are still 17 points adrift of safety with just five games to go, but this was a much-improved display in a lot of ways, and was ultimately enough to hand the Bramall Lane club just their fifth win of the Premier League campaign.
Interim boss Heckingbottom was quick to praise his side’s efforts too.
Speaking after the match, he said: “I was really pleased with the performance out there, because we showed lots of different aspects, all of the players did.
“We haven’t been clinical at times in the past but we took a big chance when it came our way when we were creating and then defended with real heart.
"That showed that the boys care, and it has shown that despite the situation they are in, knowing that their fate is sealed, they are still fighting. They are fighting for themselves, the football club and also the fans.”
In particular, the manager reserved praise for Ben Osborn, adding: “Ben has got quality in his game.
“But he’s got real personality too and that’s one of the reasons why I enjoy watching him."
