And it’s pretty much the same for football fans when our favourite player decides to up sticks and opts for pastures new.
We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
So, when we asked Blades fans to tell us which idols broke your hearts when they quit the Lane you didn’t disappoint.
Here’s 12 United players who have left the Bramall Lane faithful heartbroken when they moved on – or, in some cases, were sold by the club.
1. Brian Deane
United fans were left heartbroken not once, but twice - with Deane leaving for Leeds United in 1993 in his first spell and then Benfica in 1998. Writing on Twitter, Stephen Nield tweeted: "We was never the same when he left for Leeds." And Paul Newton, on Facebook, says: "Brian Deane. The first and second time. Not sure which was worse either." Photo: Peter Tuffrey
2. Jan Åge Fjørtoft
January 15 1998 is a dark day for Unitedites. It was the day Brian Deane, for a second time, and his Norwegian strike partner were sold. Deane joined Benfica while Fjørtoft signed for South Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley, a day @Foxy81 on Twitter will never forget. "Probably set us back more than any transfer in my lifetime supporting the blades." Photo: Getty Images
3. Vas Borbokis
When fan favourite Borbokis departed for Derby County in 1999, it left @BladeSam1983 far from happy. Writing on Twitter, he says: "That was my first full heartbreak that one. I was upset about Deane and Fjortoft but not as much as Vas. He was and still is, my hero!!" Photo: Paul Chappells
4. Mark Duffy
Duffy will always have a special place in the hearts of United supporters for THAT goal which silenced Wednesday fans during his side's 4-2 win at Hillsborough in September 2018. @RhodziLad was gutted when he left the Blades, writing on Twitter: "There'll only ever be one bounce killer." And on Facebook, Sally Ainsworth replied to our question about which player's departure left you heartbroken by saying: "Duffy because of the way he left." Photo: Simon Bellis
