Barnsley Council proposes to spend £15m in road repairs

A report to be discussed on April 21 acknowledges that “prevention is better than cure” when it comes to road repairs, and will use the cash to improve road safety, improve air quality and reduce delays on Barnsley’s roads.
Extra cash may be needed to finish off flood prevention works across the borough, according to the report.

Hide AdMore than £2m of the cash will be used to fix potholes and resurface roads, £1m will be used to tackle pollution, road safety and congestion, and £1.7M will be spent on replacing 1000 street lights.
The access road to Penistone’s Household Waste Recycling Centre has suffered “deterioration of the carriageway due to unprecedented volumes of traffic” during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the council will “bring thecarriageway back to a usable state.”
New footways will be installed at Spark Lane/Collier Way at Mapplewell, and traffic signals will be upgraded at Broadway/Keresforth Hill Road, Park Road/Day Street, Huddersfield Road/Greenfoot Lane, and Station Road / Shepherd Lane at Thurnscoe, totalling £430,000.
A number of roads across the borough have been earmarked for repairs, including Halifax Road in Penistone, Sheffield Road in Rockingham, Sheffield Road in Kingstone, Station Road in Wombwell, and Rotherham Road in St helens, including Scorah’s Roundabout.

Hide AdMatt Gladstone, executive director for place, said: “Our Highways Capital Programme will help make our roads safer and more sustainable in the longer term and focus on keeping Barnsley moving for residents and visitors.
“The highway network is a hugely important and valuable asset, so we need to ensure adequate investment to maintain it, not least to support our work to attract new business to the borough.”
