South Yorkshire Police descended on the area, in the city centre, this evening (Thursday, October 22) and placed a cordon around the entire square.
One of our reporters said he saw officers at the scene along with two police vehicles including a Crime Scene Investigations Unit.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called just before 6.30pm yesterday evening (22 October) to reports of a man with a knife in Sheffield city centre.
"A 24-year-old man was arrested on Flat Street on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon and currently remains in police custody.
"A knife was recovered from the scene.
"A cordon was put in place while officers carried out enquiries and was removed at around 11pm.
"We have received no reports of any injuries.
