WalkSafe is one of a number of safety apps downloaded in the wake of the murder of Sarah Everard, aged 33, who was killed as she walked home through London earlier this month.
The 33-year-old, originally from York, was on her way home from a friend’s house in Clapham Common when she disappeared.

In response, a surge in demand for online safety apps has been seen, with WalkSafe one of those proving most popular.
It provides a map visualising crime reports to the police and is updated each week.
The aim is to help users see where serious crimes have been committed, to spot patterns and to identify regular trouble spots.

The company behind the app said: “No one can predict where the next crime will be, however, we believe being informed and staying alert is the key to staying safer.
“WalkSafe provides the information and intuitive features that allow you to regularly check areas of crime, identify trouble spots and take action. Plan a safer route, check your regular routes and help your loved ones stay safer with WalkSafe.”
In Sheffield city centre, the map flags knife crime incidents in Barkers Pool, Pinfold Street, York Street, St Peter’s Close and Wicker. Others nearby have been reported off Exeter Way in Broomhall and Brightmore Drive, Netherthorpe.
