Year group told to stay home as Sheffield school hit by second case of Covid-19

Parents of pupils at The Birley Academy were told yesterday that a Year 10 student had contracted the virus.
In a letter, headteacher Gina Newton asked that pupils in the Year 10 year group stay home today while staff work to identify who may have come into direct contact with the infected student.

Hide AdIt comes after it was revealed that a member of the school community tested positive for the virus on September 10.
The Birley Lane secondary school did not confirm whether the school’s first positive case was a staff member or student, but unconfirmed reports claimed that a Year 9 pupil was affected.
Addressing the nation last night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of ‘tougher measures’ if people flout the latest coronavirus restrictions as cases continue to rise across the country.
Although schools will remain open, restaurants, pubs other hospitality venues will have to close by 10pm, and the number of people allowed at weddings has now been halved.
