This comes in spite of the fact that the infection rate in the city has been in a week-on-week decline throughout November, and the number of new cases falling during that period.
Sheffield’s director for public health Greg Fell last week said that while the infection rate was going ‘the right way’ Sheffield was ‘nowhere near out of the woods’ with regards to Covid-19.

Now the Government has clarified why it has placed Sheffield into Tier 3 restrictions.
A spokesperson for the Government explained: “This area is improving with case rates falling in all four lower tier local authorities.
“However, case rates in all ages and rates in those over 60 remain very high (274/100,000 and 223/100,000 respectively). Positivity is 11.0%. There is pressure on local NHS Trusts.”

Hide AdSheffield will remain in Tier 3 until at least December 16, when the tiers will be reviewed.
If the rate of spread of the virus has fallen sufficiently, it could be moved into a lower tier.
The rest of South Yorkshire is also in Tier 3.
In Tier 3, you must not meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody you do not live with, or who is not in your support bubble, this includes in any private garden or at most outdoor venues.
You also must not socialise in a group of more than 6 in some other outdoor public spaces, including parks, beaches, countryside accessible to the public, a public garden, grounds of a heritage site or castle, or a sports facility.
